Joe has over 47 years of leading, leadership consulting and teaching in the military, government and non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions. He is a parachutist and Army Ranger with numerous command and staff assignments in both the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Continental United States. He served for 13 years on the faculty of the United States Military Academy, including service as the Deputy Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and the Director (Dean) of the Academy’s Graduate Program, the Eisenhower Fellowship. He served for 3-years as a special project officer for the Chief of Staff of the US Army on an Army Cultural Transformation Initiative. Since retirement, Joe has served as a Professor of the Practice of Management at the Fuqua School of Business, and Visiting Professor, Sanford School of Public Policy, teaching four leadership and management courses, serving as a scholar in the Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics, and as the faculty advisor to the Coach K Fellows Program. He retired from Duke/Fuqua in 2017. He has performed leadership education and consulting work with the US Army and US Army Special Operations, the US Air Force, the CIA, and a number of Fortune 500 organizations. Currently serves as Chief Learning Officer, Bee Downtown Leadership Institute, with podcasts featured in the ‘Beesness’ of Leadership, educator, and teacher in NextGen, and serves as an Executive Coach with Praevius Group, Thayer Leadership Development Group (now Thayer), and Duke/Fuqua School of Business.
